3-Day Sahara Desert Adventure from Fes

Your desert adventure begins early in the morning with a pickup from your riad or hotel in Fes. Leaving the city behind, the road slowly climbs into the Middle Atlas Mountains, where landscapes change from urban life to fresh air and green scenery.

Your first pause will be in Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town with European-style architecture, followed by a drive through the cedar forests of Azrou, home to the famous Barbary macaques. Here, you can stretch your legs, take photos, and enjoy the calm of nature.

Continuing south, the journey passes through Midelt, a quiet town between the Middle and High Atlas, where you can stop for lunch. In the afternoon, the road opens onto the breathtaking Ziz Valley, lined with thousands of palm trees and traditional villages carved into the hillsides. Several scenic stops allow you to admire this dramatic oasis.

By late afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise suddenly from the desert plain. You’ll check into a comfortable hotel or kasbah at the edge of the dunes, enjoy a traditional dinner, and relax under a sky full of stars.

After breakfast, the day is dedicated to discovering the hidden life of the Sahara. You’ll explore the desert surroundings by vehicle, visiting Khamlia village, known for its Gnawa music and rich cultural heritage. You may also pass by nomadic families and see desert landscapes that change color with the light.

Later, you can enjoy free time at the hotel—relax by the pool, walk along the dunes, or simply enjoy the silence of the desert.

In the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set, you’ll ride a camel across the dunes of Erg Chebbi. The slow rhythm of the journey and the warm colors of the sunset create a truly unforgettable moment. The ride ends at a traditional desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea.

After dinner, the evening continues around the campfire with Berber music, stories, and stargazing before spending the night in a private desert tent.

Early risers are rewarded with a spectacular sunrise over the dunes, one of the most magical moments of the journey. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll return by camel or 4×4 to the hotel for a shower.

The return journey begins through Rissani, an important historical town known for its traditional markets and desert roots. From there, the road heads north again through the Middle Atlas, passing changing landscapes and mountain villages.

A lunch stop is made along the way before crossing once more through the cedar forests near Azrou. By evening, you arrive back in Fes, where the tour concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation.
