4 Days Desert Adventure from Fes to Marrakech

Your journey begins early in the morning as we leave the spiritual city of Fes and head south toward very different landscapes. Our first pause is in Ifrane, a clean and quiet mountain town with alpine-style houses, perfect for a short walk and photos.
Continuing through the Middle Atlas Mountains, we stop in the vast cedar forest of Azrou, where Barbary macaques roam freely among the trees.

As the scenery changes, we cross mountain passes and arrive in Midelt, a small town between the Middle and High Atlas, where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon, the road leads us through Errachidia and along the breathtaking Ziz Valley, an endless ribbon of palm trees and traditional villages carved into the landscape.

By late afternoon, the golden dunes of Merzouga appear on the horizon. Settle into a charming riad near the Erg Chebbi dunes and enjoy a peaceful evening on the edge of the Sahara.

After breakfast, today is dedicated to exploring the desert region. We begin with an off-road drive around the Erg Chebbi dunes, stopping at Merzouga Lake (seasonal), where desert birds sometimes gather.

Next, we visit Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa people, whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa. Enjoy their hypnotic rhythms and learn about their unique culture.
Later, we drive to M’Fis, an old mining settlement that tells stories of the region’s forgotten past. We also stop to visit a nomadic Berber family, sharing mint tea inside a traditional tent and learning how life continues far from modern cities.

In the afternoon, the adventure intensifies as you ride camels deep into the dunes. Pause on a high dune to try sandboarding and watch the sun melt into the Sahara.
Arrive at your desert camp, where dinner is served under the stars. The night comes alive with Berber drumming, stories, and an unforgettable sky full of stars.

Wake early for a magical desert sunrise before breakfast at the camp. Then we leave the dunes behind and head toward Rissani, the former capital of the Tafilalt region. If it’s a market day, you’ll experience one of the most authentic souks in southern Morocco.

Passing through Erfoud and palm-filled valleys, we reach the dramatic Todra Gorge, where towering canyon walls rise above a clear river. Take time for a walk and photos before continuing toward the Dades Valley.

The road winds through striking rock formations and traditional kasbahs. Dinner and overnight in a hotel overlooking the valley.

After breakfast, we drive through the scenic Rose Valley and along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, once a vital trade route. In spring, the valley is scented with roses; the rest of the year, it remains raw and beautiful.

We pass Skoura Oasis and arrive in Ouarzazate, Morocco’s cinema capital. After a short visit, we continue to the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ksars in the country. Explore its narrow alleys and panoramic viewpoints.

In the afternoon, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping for views and photos of remote Berber villages. By evening, we arrive in Marrakech, where your 4-day desert journey comes to a memorable end.
